Meta may have revealed the design of the slim Project Phoenix headset

Meta may have revealed the design of a slim headset codenamed Project Phoenix. Images of the device were published by UploadVR, which said it had found them in the HorizonOS Prescription Lens firmware package. The Verge reports.

A format between glasses and a headset

The published images show lenses in a thin frame resembling glasses. In terms of design, the device looks like an intermediate option between larger headsets and smart glasses. The Verge suggests that Meta may be seeking to compete with Xreal and Viture devices.

These companies produce mixed-reality glasses that are bulkier than Meta Ray-Ban AI smart glasses but more compact than a full-fledged VR headset such as the Meta Quest 3.

Wire and cameras in the images

One rear-view image shows a wire emerging from one of the temples. It may be intended to connect a battery or a separate computing module. The temples also likely contain cameras directed outward and downward.

According to The Verge, Project Phoenix has been in development for some time, and its release is expected next year. Google is also working on Project Aura XR glasses with an external computing module connected to the frame by a wire. The Meta Connect conference is scheduled to begin on September 23.
