A lawsuit has been filed against Oura regarding the accuracy of its sleep tracking

The San Francisco-based law firm Clarkson Law Firm filed a potential class-action lawsuit on Thursday against Oura, a manufacturer of smart rings. The lawsuit accuses the company of misleading consumers about the accuracy of its sleep tracking features, according to TechCrunch.

According to the complaint, Oura rings are incapable of measuring the physiological signals needed to assess sleep quality and determine sleep stages. Instead, the devices allegedly use estimates generated by artificial intelligence, the accuracy of which, the complaint claims, is comparable to flipping a coin.

The complaint states that Oura sold rings priced at $300 or more, advertising the ability to track sleep, sleep cycles, and its four phases. The plaintiffs also allege that the company positioned the devices as built for accuracy and as providing unmatched precision.

According to the complaint, Oura told customers that its measurements were 79% accurate and later claimed 95% accuracy in determining sleep stages compared to clinical sleep labs. The lawsuit alleges that determining sleep stages requires electrodes on the scalp and eye sensors, since sleep processes occur in the brain, not in a finger.

The lawsuit seeks to compel Oura to cease its allegedly false advertising of its devices’ capabilities, as well as to issue a court injunction against further misleading consumers and to provide refunds to buyers who purchased the products based on the disputed claims. Oura did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TechCrunch.
