Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to completely discontinue the release of physical discs for new PlayStation console games starting in January 2028. According to preliminary information, all new releases will be available only in digital format, without physical media.
It is noted that starting in 2028, new releases will be available exclusively in digital format—via the PlayStation Store and digital versions from retailers.
The company attributed this decision to changing consumer preferences and the gaming industry’s overall shift from physical media to digital content distribution.
“This is a natural evolution for Sony Interactive Entertainment, reflecting how the majority of our community today prefers to access games,” Schuman said.
Sony emphasized that this will not affect games that have already been released or will be released in physical format by January 2028; these will still be available on disc.
In addition, the company announced on Wednesday that it will gradually shut down the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita consoles. The process will begin in 2026 in select countries and conclude with the global shutdown of the service in 2027.
Once the store closes, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital content for these consoles. However, Sony notes that previously purchased games and content will remain available for download for an indefinite period.
The company attributed this decision to technical limitations of the older platforms and the need to adapt to modern digital commerce standards, particularly updated payment systems that the PS3 and PS Vita no longer support to the necessary extent. This decision is also linked to the gradual shift of resources toward supporting newer consoles, where the majority of active users are concentrated.
This was announced by Sid Shuman, the company’s senior director of content communications.
