Tesla to unveil steering wheel-free Cybercab robotaxi in Austin on September 3 — Motor1

Tesla will hold an event in Austin on September 3, 2026, dedicated to the launch of the Cybercab robotaxi. The two-seat vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and therefore relies entirely on Full Self-Driving software and the AI4 onboard computer. As Motor1 reports, the event does not mean that approval has been obtained from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and passenger access to the Cybercab will be limited at the initial stage.

Invitations for selected guests

Tesla calls the event a celebration of the launch of its Cybercab robotaxi. Attendance is intended only for invited guests: visitors must be at least 21 years old, and identity documents will be checked at the entrance.

Some invitations were received by users who took Robotaxi rides between August 17 and 23. Five spots were to be raffled among them. Other recipients were sent emails marked Exclusive Access, offering them the opportunity to confirm attendance by August 30 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Robotaxi without manual controls

The Cybercab has an interior for two passengers and does not provide an option for a person to take over control of the vehicle. According to the publication, Tesla had already tested autonomous Cybercabs on a closed track in California in October 2024, and in July 2026 began employee rides in these vehicles.

The company also operates driverless Model Y robotaxis in limited areas of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Federal safety requirements remain important for vehicles without a traditional driver's seat. Motor1 notes that after the September 3 event, Cybercab access for the general public is unlikely to become widespread immediately.
