China launches AR glasses for electricity meter inventory — ECNS
State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company in Suqian, China, has launched a system using AR glasses for inventory and verification of electricity meters at its metrology warehouse. ECNS reports that the pilot project began operating in August at the secondary metrology warehouse of the company’s Customer Service Center.
Senior metrology manager Yu Shengyong said that previously, employees had to navigate through several levels of menus in the Marketing System 2.0 to check meter data. Now, after scanning a device, the operator sees the verification date, delivery date and equipment operating status in their field of view. According to him, on September 1, he scanned meters designated for dispatch and retrieved the devices using voice prompts, completing the entire verification process in less than three minutes.
How the system works
The solution was developed jointly with Fantian after studying the problems of metrological asset operations in April 2026. It combines AR glasses, a Marketing System mobile handheld terminal and Marketing System 2.0. The glasses read unique equipment identifiers from barcodes and visualize information, while the mobile terminal receives these identifiers and, through server interfaces, loads asset data and work tasks.
Synchronization between the glasses and the terminal takes place via Bluetooth. The server system provides inventory data and information on equipment storage locations, forming the sequence “identification — query — display.”

Use cases
The technology is used to retrieve information about meters, inspect warehouse status, receive equipment and dispatch it. During a warehouse inspection, an employee can point the glasses at a special code and see the total number of devices, data on equipment in storage and issued assets, devices approaching their verification deadline, faulty devices requiring repair, and overdue unprocessed records.
During receiving, the system automatically matches equipment to the work task, checks compliance with requirements and records the data in the inventory. If the type or status of a device does not match the parameters, the glasses issue a red warning and block the operation. The dispatch module operates on a first-in, first-out basis and warns about the absence of required devices or abnormal equipment status.
More than 60,000 metrological devices are recorded at the secondary metrology warehouse of the Customer Service Center. According to the company, after the system was launched, verification of one device takes less than a minute, and operations were performed without operational errors.
