A facility that produces fuel from water and air has been built in Sweden

Swedish engineers have developed a device about the size of a large refrigerator that can produce fuel from water, air, and renewable electricity. They plan to use this technology in regions with cheap and readily available “green” energy.

 

The estimated price of the machine ranges from 14,000 to 18,500 euros per unit, and the company plans to begin sales in the United States in late 2026. 

The inventors of this device are two Swedish engineers, Mia and Erik Dahlgren. To develop their invention, they founded the company Aircela in New York in 2019.

The engineers unveiled their invention in May 2025 in New York.

According to reports, the device produces fuel from three elements: air, water, and renewable electricity.

“The machine is about the size of a large refrigerator and consists of three blue hexagonal modules. It produces about 3.6 liters of gasoline every 24 hours and absorbs about 10 kilograms of CO₂ from the atmosphere per day,” the article states.

The publication emphasized that the gasoline produced by this device is suitable for modern vehicles.

The fuel produced contains no sulfur, ethanol, or heavy metals. The device has an internal capacity of up to 64 liters.

“Its octane rating is equivalent to 95-octane gasoline, making it directly compatible with modern internal combustion engines without any modifications,” the article noted.

The estimated retail price of the machine ranges from 14,000 to 18,500 euros per unit. The company plans to begin sales in the United States in late 2026.

One limitation of the device is its efficiency. Producing each liter of gasoline consumes about 20 kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to using twice as much energy as the fuel releases during combustion.

The inventors acknowledge this discrepancy and emphasize the device’s suitability for use in locations where renewable electricity is cheap and abundant: in areas with a surplus of solar or wind energy, where this energy would otherwise be wasted.

Thus, the target market is not urban residents, but rather remote communities, military facilities, agricultural areas, or industrial users without easy access to refueling stations and with a supply of renewable electricity.

First, the machine draws in air from the surrounding environment and passes it through a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, which acts as an absorbent and captures the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere.

Renewable electricity then splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. The oxygen is released into the environment, while the hydrogen is stored for the next stage.

In the next stage, the captured CO₂ and the hydrogen produced are combined to produce methanol, which is then converted into gasoline through a catalytic process known as MTG (methanol-to-gasoline).

The carbon cycle is neutral: the CO₂ emitted by the engine during fuel combustion was previously absorbed from the atmosphere.
