Valve is still deciding how and when to release Steam Deck 2 — The Verge

Valve is still deciding how and when it will be able to release the next-generation Steam Deck 2 handheld gaming console. The company’s designer, Pierre-Loup Griffais, told IGN that Valve is considering “how and when” it will be able to introduce such a device.

As The Verge reports, the company has been saying for several years that Steam Deck 2 will arrive when it finds a suitable chip for it. For Valve, the combination of price, performance, and battery life delivered by the original Steam Deck is important.

Performance and battery life

In 2023, Griffais explained that Valve does not want to increase the new device’s performance at the cost of significantly worsening power efficiency and battery life. According to him, the company is aiming for a noticeable technological leap rather than a minor specifications update.

Earlier this year, Griffais said in another interview with IGN that the team is actively working on the next Steam Deck handheld console. At the same time, he did not specify when it might appear.

Impact of component shortages

When IGN asked whether the current shortage of hardware components had affected the approach to developing Steam Deck 2, Griffais replied: “Not really.” The Verge notes that memory shortages previously forced Valve to postpone the release of Steam Machine and the Steam Frame headset and revise their prices.
