June 18: What holiday is today? Folk traditions and important historical events

June 18 is celebrated worldwide as Sustainable Gastronomy Day, and according to the church calendar, it is the day to honor the memory of Saint Leontius the Martyr.

This day is also associated with a number of important historical events and folk traditions.

Sustainable Gastronomy Day

The holiday was established by the UN General Assembly in 2016 to draw attention to the responsible use of natural resources in food production and consumption.

The concept of sustainable gastronomy includes:

  • support for local producers;
  • the rational use of natural resources;
  • reducing food waste;
  • preserving the environment and biodiversity.

This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of caring for mental health, managing stress, and supporting people who are going through difficult life situations.

The Orthodox Church honors Saint Leontius the Martyr, who lived in the first century and served as a military commander in the Phoenician city of Tripoli.

Leontius secretly practiced Christianity and preached the faith among soldiers and local residents. According to legend, he healed the tribune Hypatius through prayer, after which Hypatius and his friend Theodulus were baptized.

After a denunciation against the Christians, the governor Adrian ordered all three to be arrested. Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus were subjected to brutal torture and executed for refusing to renounce their faith.

On this day, people paid attention to weather signs:

  • fog over the lowlands in the morning—a sign of a sunny and hot day;
  • many spiders on plants—dry weather in the coming days;
  • large bubbles in puddles during rain—the bad weather will linger;
  • a strong smell of grass in the morning—a warm summer shower is coming.

This date is relatively new, but its main goal is very serious—to draw attention to the conservation of crocodiles and alligators, some of which are threatened with extinction. On this day, environmentalists, scientists, and conservation organizations remind us that these ancient reptiles play an important role in natural ecosystems.
