An American expert said that Trump will not be able to force Ukraine to accept an unfavorable peace deal
U.S. President Donald Trump will not be able to force Ukraine to agree to an unfavorable peace deal, even if he wants to use the end of the war as a political victory for himself ahead of the congressional elections.
This view was expressed in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by American diplomat, entrepreneur, and Republican Gregory Slayton.
According to him, Trump is interested in high-profile political successes because his approval ratings are low and the situation in U.S. domestic and foreign policy remains complex. At the same time, the American system of checks and balances does not allow the president to make all decisions unilaterally.
“Trump cannot force Ukraine to accept an unfavorable peace,” Slayton emphasized.
The expert also criticized Trump’s transactional approach to foreign policy, based on the “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” principle. In his view, the U.S. president should not be guided solely by pragmatic agreements but must act in the interests of the country and its allies.
Slayton considers Trump’s soft stance toward Vladimir Putin and Russia to be counterproductive. According to him, more and more Americans are beginning to realize the scale of Russian propaganda and disinformation.
Separately, the diplomat emphasized that Ukraine needs active public relations efforts in the U.S. In his view, the future Ukrainian ambassador to Washington should regularly appear in leading American media outlets, particularly CNN and Fox News, to convey Ukraine’s position and counter Russian propaganda.
Slayton is also convinced that American society as a whole will not leave Ukraine without support, despite the Trump administration’s controversial policies.
