A fighter from the "Somali" unit was sentenced to 12 years in prison for participating in the war against Ukraine

Based on evidence provided by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), a court has sentenced a resident of Donetsk who fought as part of the “Somali” terrorist group and attempted to flee to the European Union via Ukrainian territory. The suspect was detained in October 2025 in Kovel, Volyn Oblast.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine, the militant arrived in the western region posing as an internally displaced person, hoping to obtain a Ukrainian passport and travel to the EU by claiming a disability sustained during the battles for Donetsk Airport.

The investigation established that the detainee had joined the Russian occupation forces as early as 2015. During a search of his hotel room, Russian and “DPR” military IDs, as well as enemy symbols, were seized. Despite his attempts to pass himself off as a civilian, counterintelligence documented his participation in the assaults on Donetsk Airport and other combat operations against the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The court found the defendant guilty of treason and participation in illegal armed groups. Thanks to his cooperation with the investigation, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. The SBU emphasizes that anyone who has betrayed their oath or fought against their own state will inevitably face consequences, even if they attempt to hide abroad under the guise of a refugee. The verdict has already taken legal effect.

Earlier, three car arsonists acting on orders from the Russian Federation were detained in Ternopil and Cherkasy. They were looking for easy money on social media, and their targets were vehicles undergoing maintenance after completing combat missions on the front lines.

The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police detained a man in Zakarpattia who, acting on orders from Russian special services, set fire to vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Red Cross Society.
