Father's Day: The History of the Holiday, Fun Facts, and Greetings
In Ukraine, Father’s Day is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday in June. In 2026, the holiday falls on June 21. On this day, Ukrainians congratulate fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and all men who actively participate in raising children and supporting their families.
Father’s Day was designated a national holiday in 2019 following a corresponding government decision.
Since then, Ukraine has officially joined many countries around the world that celebrate this holiday on the third Sunday in June.
At the same time, Ukraine has another date dedicated to fathers—National Father’s Day, which is celebrated on the third Sunday in September. In 2026, it falls on September 20. However, Father’s Day in June remains the official national holiday.
The history of the holiday traces back to the United States. The initiative to establish Father’s Day came from an American woman named Sonora Smart Dodd.
In 1909, she proposed establishing a separate holiday in honor of her father, who had raised six children on his own after his wife’s death. In this way, she wanted to express her gratitude for his love, care, and selflessness.
Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910. The tradition quickly spread throughout the United States and later to other countries around the world.
By the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, the holiday had become international and is now celebrated in dozens of countries.
On Father’s Day, children and adults express their gratitude to their fathers for their support, care, and life lessons. Families spend time together, exchange gifts and cards, and share heartfelt words of thanks.
The holiday is meant to remind us of the important role fathers play in raising children, strengthening family values, and shaping future generations.
