Photo: A windstorm destroyed more than 400 hectares of forest in the Rivne and Volyn regions
As a result of a powerful windstorm that swept through the Rivne and Volyn regions, more than 400 hectares of forest stands were destroyed.
Employees of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” have already conducted a rapid assessment of the affected areas and documented extensive damage, which primarily affected pine forests.
In Volyn, the Manevychi Forest District suffered the most damage, with the storm damaging approximately 150 hectares of forest.
Another 36 hectares were affected in the Kivertsi Forest District, while experts continue to assess the affected areas in other parts of the region. In total, approximately 200 hectares of damaged forest stands have been preliminarily recorded in the Volyn region.
The situation in the Rivne region appears no less serious: in the Sosniv Forest District, the storm destroyed 170 hectares of forest, and in the Klesiv Forest District—70 hectares.
In addition, 22 hectares of damage have been recorded in the Vysotsk Forest District, and localized damage has also been observed in the Rafaliv Forest District.
Experts note that pine stands proved to be the most sensitive to high temperatures and dry conditions, which contributed to the greater scale of the damage.
As a result, the speed of foresters’ response is critical to minimizing the consequences of this natural disaster.
Foresters emphasize that windthrow is a dangerous natural disaster capable of causing losses on the same scale as wildfires.
Decades of painstaking work can be wiped out in a single hour of severe weather, which is why large-scale efforts are currently underway to assess the damage and plan restoration measures.
