Ukraine and Sweden have signed an agreement to purchase 16 state-of-the-art Gripen E fighter jets

Ukraine and Sweden have officially signed an agreement for the purchase of 16 Gripen E next-generation multi-role fighter jets, which also provides for the supply of related equipment, logistical support, and technical assistance.

Deliveries of this model will begin in early 2029, and the purchase will be financed through a loan from the European Union with support from the United Kingdom.

At the same time, clear deadlines for the transfer of previous-generation aircraft were confirmed. As part of previously reached bilateral agreements with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the first 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets will be transferred free of charge to the Ukrainian Air Force as military aid as early as the beginning of 2027. Currently, the training of Ukrainian military pilots and technical personnel is already organized and actively underway in Sweden.

In the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonsson, the document was signed by Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense Serhiy Boev and Director General of the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) Mikael Granholm. In addition to the aviation contract, during the meeting the parties discussed joint efforts to develop European ballistic missile defense, Sweden’s participation in the PURL program, and preparations for a future large-scale agreement in the field of unmanned systems (the Drone Deal).

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would allocate part of the 90 billion euro financial aid package from the European Union to defense needs, specifically for the purchase of Gripen fighter jets from Sweden. According to the head of state, the funding will help strengthen Ukraine’s defense and modernize its aviation capabilities.

Following inspections in May, the two largest payment terminal networks—EasyPay (LLC “FC ‘Kontraktovy Dom’”) and City24 (LLC “Swift Garant”)—were hit with massive fines: 135 million hryvnias each.
