What religious holiday is celebrated on May 27?

On May 27, Orthodox Christians in Ukraine commemorate the Holy Martyr Ferapont, Bishop of Sardis, who suffered for his faith in the 3rd century. On this day, people traditionally reflect on his life, pray for protection, and observe folk traditions and superstitions. The holiday combines church history with ancient folk beliefs about nature and human behavior.

May 27 on the church calendar is dedicated to the holy martyr Ferapont, Bishop of Sardis, who lived in the 3rd century in what is now Turkey and became known as a preacher of Christianity who converted pagans to the faith despite persecution.

According to legend, after the ruler learned of his activities, Ferapont was thrown into a dungeon, where he was starved and thirsted, yet he did not renounce his faith and remained steadfast even during torture, eventually suffering a martyr’s death. Folk legends even mention that trees with healing properties supposedly grew at the site of his death.

On this day, believers turn to the saint with prayers for steadfastness, protection from trials, and inner strength, for the image of Ferapont symbolizes endurance and fidelity to one’s convictions even in the most difficult circumstances.

Among the people, May 27 was also associated with weather observations and natural changes, which, according to folk beliefs, could indicate what the coming season would be like.

If the air was stifling in the morning, people expected bad weather; if there was fog, they anticipated a bountiful mushroom season; and clear weather with “lively” soil could signal an approaching thunderstorm. It was also believed that the sound of the forest without wind foreshadowed rain in the near future, and the weather on this day seemed to set the tone for the entire fall.

There were also certain taboos on this day: people were advised not to quarrel, argue with family members, or engage in idle chatter, so as not to invite trouble. It was also considered undesirable to do major cleaning, wash the floor, or take out the trash, so as not to “carry out” peace and well-being from the home.
