Ukraine’s third president, Viktor Yushchenko, commented on the reburial ceremony of Andriy Melnyk, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife, Sofia Fedak-Melnyk, at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. According to Yushchenko, Ukraine must continue its efforts to repatriate the remains of thousands of prominent Ukrainians whose graves are currently located outside the country. He emphasized that this is an important task for state policy and national memory.
He stressed that Ukraine must also repatriate the remains of other prominent Ukrainians.
Yushchenko called the reburial “a great national sacrament of restoring our historical justice.” In his words, Ukrainian soil “is finally embracing its sons and daughters, who for decades were forced to bear the cross of a foreign land.”
“For centuries, the enemy sought not only to destroy us physically but also to scatter our memory across the world. Our leaders, our hetmans, thinkers, and warriors became prisoners of foreign cemeteries. And today, standing on the sacred hills of Kyiv, we must clearly realize: the Ukrainian Pantheon of Heroes will not be complete until everyone who forged the shield of our independence returns home,” he said.
The former head of Ukraine emphasized the need to return the remains of Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the author of the first Constitution, Pylyp Orlyk, to their homeland.
“We must bring back to our native soil Chief Ataman Symon Petliura, Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi, leader Stepan Bandera, and thousands of other dignitaries of our nation, whose graves are scattered from Paris and Munich to the distant expanses of Siberia. As long as they remain in a foreign land, our historical landscape remains wounded. A nation that does not bring back its heroes risks losing its future. A nation that gathers its sacred relics together, however, becomes a monolith that no one can ever break,” Yushchenko noted.
Yushchenko addressed an open letter to Orbán: “Remember who you were.”
Prior to this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbánpublished a video message in which he claimed that Ukrainians were allegedly threatening his family, children, and grandchildren.
Ukraine is importantfor maintaining the balance between Hungary and Russia — Orbán.
The Hungarian government has deployed the military to guard 75 energy facilities due to a “threat” from Ukraine.
Due to the war in the Middle East, the global market is losing significant volumes of oil, which is putting pressure on energy prices. Therefore, according to Hungary, the ban on imports of Russian oil and gasmust be immediately reviewed.
