The commander of a military unit will stand trial for illegal combat operations amounting to 9 million hryvnias

An indictment has been filed against the commander of a military unit and his subordinates, who are accused of illegally awarding military personnel more than 9 million hryvnias in additional compensation for their alleged participation in combat operations.

According to the investigation, the commander of the unit, which was carrying out missions in the Donetsk region, organized the scheme and enlisted his subordinates in it. Among the accused are also the chief of staff—the deputy commander—the commander of the logistics platoon, and other service members.

 Between January 2023 and November 2024, according to the investigation, the suspects included false information in reports and other documents regarding the military personnel’s direct participation in combat operations. Based on these documents, orders were issued to pay additional compensation.

As a result, military personnel were unjustifiably paid over 9 million hryvnias, which, according to the investigation, were subsequently distributed among the group members.

The state filed a civil claim for over 9 million hryvnias. The defendants’ assets were seized, though they have already reimbursed 1.6 million hryvnias.

The defendants’ actions were classified under articles concerning abuse of official position as part of an organized group and official forgery.
