A parliamentary committee has approved the new Civil Code for its first reading
The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Policy has recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt the draft of the new Civil Code of Ukraine in the first reading.
This was reported following the committee’s meeting.
According to Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, the document is a comprehensive code of private law and consists of nine books covering key areas—from general provisions to inheritance and private international law.
He noted that the current version has been significantly revised compared to the initial draft. It incorporates suggestions received during a public consultation that lasted over two months.
Stefanchuk emphasized that the principle of caution was followed during the document’s preparation: controversial provisions were not changed without sufficient consensus.
Work on the code lasted about seven years, and if it passes the first reading, the document will be further refined before the second reading.
The updated Civil Code is expected to have a high chance of receiving parliamentary support.
As a reminder, nearly a third of Ukrainian pensioners receive a pension that is half the average.
The Cabinet of Ministers also plans to increase pensions in Ukraine.
