Lviv-based Elektron May Manufacture Rubber-Tired Trams for Switzerland
The Lviv-based “Elektron” Group is discussing with Swiss partners the possibility of manufacturing a four-section wheeled tram. The company has already held two meetings regarding the project, and the next step will be negotiations with Swiss engineers and technologists.
This type of vehicle does not require traditional tracks. Similar trams are already in use in China, and one prototype has been introduced in Europe. In Switzerland, this technology is being considered primarily for mountainous regions, where building tram tracks is difficult.
“China has been using this technology for a long time, and Switzerland has also decided to build such a tram. After all, it is very difficult to lay rail transport in mountainous terrain,” explained Yuriy Bubes, chairman of the board of “Elektron.”
A Swiss group of engineers and technologists made the proposal to the Lviv-based company. They plan to discuss the details of a potential collaboration during InnoTrans, an international exhibition of transportation technologies and the railway industry.
“Elektron” is also considering the possibility of manufacturing such trams for the Ukrainian Carpathians, the Carpathian Foothills, and Transcarpathia. According to Bubes, the project could be implemented in Ukraine with state support and the participation of international donors.

A large-scale modernization of the city’s electric transit system has begun in Kamensk. The Metinvest metallurgical holding company, which includes Kametstal, has allocated over 50 million hryvnia to co-finance the purchase of 17 modern tram cars.
Swiss partners will deliver another batch of 23 Tram 2000 low-floor trams to Vinnytsia, along with a set of necessary spare parts for them.
