Maximum penalty for a fatal traffic accident in Lviv Oblast

The court sentenced a 25-year-old resident of the Sambir District to 10 years in prison for striking a 17-year-old girl while driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene of the accident. After the accident, the man did not call for help, hid the car, and attempted to cover up evidence of the crime. The girl died at the scene. The court also banned the driver from operating a vehicle for 10 years.

Juvenile prosecutors from the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office proved in court the guilt of the 25-year-old Sambir resident who caused the fatal accident. The accident occurred on the evening of October 1, 2025, in the village of Verkhivtsi, Sambir District. The man was driving a “VAZ 2107” while intoxicated, was speeding, and struck a 17-year-old girl who was walking along the side of the road.

According to the investigation, road conditions allowed the driver to see the pedestrian. The street was well-lit, the girl’s clothing was visible in the dark, and she was holding a phone with the flashlight turned on. However, after hitting her, the man did not stop or provide assistance to the victim. He left the scene of the accident and drove away.

The driver hid the damaged car in the yard of an acquaintance and tried to cover up the traces of the collision with old clothes. Afterward, he continued drinking alcohol to create the impression that he had become intoxicated only after the accident. The 17-year-old girl died at the scene of the accident from her injuries. She was found by her mother, who had gone out to look for her daughter after she failed to return home.

Law enforcement officers located the vehicle within a few hours and arrested the driver. The court found the man guilty of violating traffic safety rules while intoxicated, resulting in a fatality, as well as of leaving the victim in danger. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty—10 years in prison. He was also barred from driving for 10 years. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Law enforcement officers detained three more active participants in the riots that took place on July 8 in the Sykhiv district of Lviv near the District Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support (DTRCS).

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the attack on military personnel at the Territorial Recruitment Center in Lviv. The head of state stated that such treatment of people in military uniform is unacceptable, and that all circumstances of the incident must be thoroughly investigated.
