Colonel Kostyantyn Humenyuk has been appointed head of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Medical Corps
Colonel (Medical Service) Kostyantyn Humenyuk has been appointed commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The new commander has already been tasked with changing the approach to providing care to Ukrainian servicemembers.
“I introduced the new commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine—Colonel of the Medical Service Kostyantyn Humenyuk, appointed by decree of the President of Ukraine—to the team,” Drapatiy noted.
What is known about the new commander
Kostyantyn Humenyuk is a military surgeon with experience serving in the Airborne Assault Forces. He previously held the position of Chief Surgeon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“He fully understands the weight of every decision made at the operating table. He has extensive practical experience helping people in the most difficult situations and enjoys unquestionable authority among medical personnel in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the civilian healthcare system, and the volunteer community,” emphasized the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
What tasks have been set for Humenyuk
In his new position, Humenyuk is to focus on reforms within the Ukrainian Armed Forces Medical Corps. The goal is to make medical care for military personnel more technologically advanced, responsive, and results-oriented.
Drapatiy stressed that the main indicator of the effectiveness of military medicine should not be the number of first-aid kits, hospitals, or meetings held, but rather the number of Ukrainian servicemembers’ lives that can be saved.
Overcoming the personnel shortage in the military medical system remains a separate challenge. According to the Commander-in-Chief, the Medical Forces need to recruit more qualified doctors and other medical personnel.
“We are continuing to work to make our Medical Forces more effective and stronger—together with all the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Drapaty concluded.
