Residents of Uman removed the mayor from office
The convention of the “For the Future” political party reviewed the appeal from the Uman City Territorial Election Commission and unanimously adopted a resolution to remove Iryna Pletnyova from office as mayor of Uman through a citizens’ initiative.
The procedure for early termination of her term began in late July due to residents’ dissatisfaction with rising utility and public transportation rates, the closure of kindergartens, deteriorating water quality, and decisions regarding the management of municipal property.
Following the verification process, the TEC validated 6,421 voter signatures collected to initiate the mayor’s recall, a number that exceeded the number of votes Pletnyova received during her election in 2020. Rostislav Zavoloka, the new city council secretary from the “Servant of the People” party, will temporarily serve as acting mayor until special elections are held, while Iryna Pletnyova herself disagreed with the results of the signature verification and announced her intention to challenge the decision in court.

On September 11–13, Uman is expecting pilgrims to arrive for the Rosh Hashanah celebrations. Local authorities are already coordinating security measures, medical support, and transportation, taking into account the conditions of martial law.
On July 29, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Hasidic pilgrims to take security risks into account when traveling to Uman for the Rosh Hashanah celebrations. The ministry emphasized that due to the Russian Federation’s ongoing massive missile strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, it is impossible to guarantee the complete safety of foreign citizens on Ukrainian territory.
