The body of 10-year-old Sofia was found on the coast of the Odesa region near Pivdenne; she had gone missing in mid-June after being swept out to sea by the current. The search operation lasted nearly three weeks.

According to law enforcement officials, the child’s body was recovered from the water on July 7.

Due to the strong current, the girl was quickly swept away from the shore. Despite search and rescue efforts, she could not be found alive.

The body has been sent for a forensic medical examination to determine the exact cause of death,” police said.

As a reminder, on June 19, 10-year-old Sofia was vacationing at the beach near the village of Sychavka with her great-grandmother. They were swimming in an unauthorized area where swimming is prohibited.

While swimming, a strong current began to carry the child on an inflatable ring out into the open sea. Her great-grandmother tried to rescue the girl on her own but was unable to do so. Rescuers arrived at the scene and began search operations.

Five days later, the active phase of the search for the girl was called off, according to the Odesa Regional Police.
