On July 9, Orthodox Christians honor the Holy Martyr Pankratius: traditions and customs

According to the New Julian calendar, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the Holy Martyr Pankratius, Bishop of Tauromenium, on July 9. The saint was a disciple of the Apostles Peter and Paul and the first bishop of the city of Tauromenium in Sicily, where he converted many townspeople to Christianity and built a church; for his faith, he suffered a martyr’s death at the hands of pagans.

Believers turn to Pankratius with prayers for health, peace in the family, family well-being, and protection from evil.

In folk tradition, this day was called “Berry Day” or “Blueberry Day,” as it typically marked the start of the mass harvest of wild blueberries. It was believed that eating this berry on July 9 ensured good health for the entire year, so housewives would bake pies and make dumplings filled with blueberries. Also on this day, the first harvest of cucumbers was gathered, and people used folk signs to predict the coming weather: an abundance of blueberries foreshadowed a harsh winter, while lilies closing during the day or fish leaping out of the water signaled an imminent rain. On this day, believers are advised to refrain from quarrels, foul language, and lending money.

On July 8, according to the new church calendar, Orthodox Christians in Ukraine commemorate the Great Martyr Prokopius. Among the people, this day is known as Prokopius Day, with which many traditions, folk signs, and beliefs are associated.
