An outbreak of African swine fever has been detected in wild boars in the Vinnytsia region

A mass die-off of wild boars has been reported in the Mohyliv-Podilskyi District of Vinnytsia Oblast.

Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF). Experts are determining the extent of the infection’s spread and implementing necessary anti-epizootic measures.

This was reported by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

According to the report, 11 animal carcasses were found in the district’s hunting grounds. This is already the sixth case of the disease in wild animals in Ukraine since the beginning of 2026. Previous outbreaks among wild boars this year were recorded in Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Zakarpattia regions.

Experts emphasize that wild animals are currently the main source of the virus’s spread. The situation is complicated by several factors:

  • Natural reservoir: Wild boars carry the infection to farms with domestic pigs.
  • Consequences of the war: Due to martial law restrictions, it is impossible to effectively regulate the wild boar population, leading to the formation of persistent natural foci of infection.
  • Virus persistence: The carcasses of dead animals can remain a source of the virus for a long time and contaminate the environment.

To prevent the disease from spreading to domestic pigs, citizens are strongly advised to:

  • Avoid contact with wild animals while in the forest.
  • If you find a dead wild boar, do not approach it; mark the location and immediately notify local authorities or the regional office of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
  • For animal owners: prevent domestic pigs from coming into contact with the wild, and regularly disinfect footwear.
  • Strict prohibition: Do not use food waste or unprocessed grain from fields to feed pigs.

The State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection urges everyone to be as vigilant as possible, as adherence to biosafety rules is the only way to protect the livestock industry from economic losses.

Earlier, doctors in Lviv diagnosed a man who had returned from Uganda with tropical malaria.

The first case of hantavirus—a disease transmitted to humans by rats and other rodents—has been recorded in the Lviv region.
