In Zhytomyr Oblast, embezzlement of 2.7 million hryvnias at a defense facility construction site was uncovered
Law enforcement officials have detained a contractor on suspicion of embezzling public funds. According to the investigation, while carrying out a defense contract in the Zhytomyr region, those involved in the scheme caused the state losses amounting to 2.7 million hryvnias. The Security Service of Ukraine reported this on May 27.
Thus, during the construction of a Ukrainian Armed Forces command post on the territory of one of the military units, at least 2.7 million hryvnias were stolen. According to the case file, the suspect’s company received a contract to build a defense facility.
Under the terms of the agreement, the company’s co-owner, who also served as a technical supervision engineer, was responsible for overseeing the quality of the construction work and ensuring its completion within the agreed-upon deadlines. Instead, she turned a blind eye to the missed deadlines and signed an act transferring the unfinished construction project to the military unit’s balance sheet.
The investigation also revealed that contractors used substandard building materials, rendering the facility completely unsuitable for its intended defense purpose.
An engineering and technical forensic examination initiated by law enforcement confirmed the poor technical condition of the military structure. The suspect has been notified of charges under Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (official negligence).
The suspect faces up to 5 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing to identify all individuals involved in the scheme. Comprehensive measures were carried out under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense in the Central Region.
