The National Commission for UNESCO Condemned the Russian Strike on the Building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

The Ukrainian National Commission for UNESCO condemned the Russian attack on Kyiv on September 28, which damaged the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The strike damaged the building housing the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

The commission noted that the damaged building houses the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine—the country’s leading national scientific institution and the central body responsible for organizing and coordinating scientific research in Ukraine.

The leadership of the Science Sector of the Ukrainian National Commission for UNESCO also works there.

“The damage to the Presidium building is not only physical damage inflicted on a historic structure but also a serious blow to the institution that is the heart of Ukraine’s scientific and intellectual life,” the statement emphasized.

The National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO stated that Russian attacks are systematically causing damage to Ukrainian scientific, educational, and cultural institutions.

According to the commission, universities, libraries, museums, and archives are being damaged. Unique information sources, scientific achievements, archival materials, and other elements of the national scientific heritage are being destroyed.

The Commission has appealed to UNESCO

The National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO has appealed to the Director-General of UNESCO, the relevant bodies of the Organization, and Member States, demanding an assessment of Russia’s systematic destruction of Ukraine’s scientific, educational, and cultural heritage.

The Commission called on UNESCO to assist in documenting and recording the damage caused by Russian attacks on Ukrainian scientific institutions and collections.

It also called for strengthening international mechanisms to protect Ukraine’s scientific and intellectual heritage and for facilitating the preservation and digitization of scientific collections threatened with destruction.

In addition, the commission called for drawing the international community’s attention to Russia’s destruction of Ukraine’s scientific and intellectual potential, increasing international pressure on the Russian Federation, and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

The German Foreign Ministry issued a strong condemnation of the Russian strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The attack took place near the German embassy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the Russian strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. She stated that science has become a target for Russia.

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternová reported that on the afternoon of September 28, a Russian drone struck a building located 200 meters from the EU Delegation’s office.

Maternová also emphasized that Ukraine needs more air defense capabilities and that pressure on Russia must be increased.

This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its Telegram channel.

In Kyiv, firefighters have extinguished a fire at the National Academy of Sciences building.
