A granddaughter saved her 79-year-old grandfather after he suffered cardiac arrest

In the Lviv region, a granddaughter saved the life of 79-year-old Yaroslav Borodiy, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was clinically dead. The young woman kept her composure and immediately began performing chest compressions.

She continued CPR until the ambulance crew arrived. Paramedics transported the man to St. Luke’s Hospital in Lviv with an acute myocardial infarction, where specialists continued to fight for his life.

The grandfather was visiting his granddaughter Lilia. He went out into the yard and suddenly lost consciousness. His granddaughter didn’t panic and began to resuscitate him.

“My grandfather fell; my brother was nearby, so I yelled at him to call an ambulance, while I got down on my knees and performed chest compressions. Grandpa was already completely blue when he fell, but I could tell that as I pressed on his chest, his skin started to turn pink,” says his granddaughter.

The ambulance crew arrived in less than 10 minutes and diagnosed the man with sudden cardiac arrest. Using a defibrillator, they restarted my grandfather’s heart and took him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with an acute myocardial infarction, and it was found that the circumflex and right coronary arteries were 99% blocked. These are two of the three main arteries that supply blood to the heart. The patient’s condition was critical, according to hospital officials.

Specialists performed a minimally invasive stenting procedure on both arteries. Through a small puncture in an artery in the patient’s arm, they inserted stents into the arteries, expanded them in the narrowed areas, and restored normal blood flow to the heart. However, during the endovascular procedure, the patient suddenly developed ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous arrhythmia in which the heart’s effective pumping function and blood circulation cease. The doctors managed to restore his heart rhythm and stabilize his condition. The man’s life was saved for the second time.

He is now back home. His family is grateful to the medical staff for saving their father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and the doctors are grateful to his granddaughter Lilia for keeping her composure in a critical situation and responding appropriately.

The incident was reported on the hospital’s page

As a reminder, Ukraine will establish its first Center for Robotic Surgery.

In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman simultaneously had a recurrent ventral hernia removed, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
