Siverskodonetsk’s signature lake has nearly dried up under occupation

In occupied Sievierodonetsk, Lake Chyste—which was one of the city’s main landmarks before the full-scale war—has almost completely dried up.

Photos and videos showing the current state of the lake have appeared online.

Chyste Lake is an artificial reservoir created in the 1950s on the site of natural springs. It was later deepened, its bottom reinforced, and a water conduit connected from the Borova River.

Before the full-scale invasion began, the lake remained a popular recreational spot for local residents. The lake was home to carp and crucian carp, swans would visit, and in winter, city residents would go ice skating there.

Now, judging by the published footage, the body of water has almost completely dried up.

In Hungary, Lake Balaton has frozen over completely for the first time since 2017. After several days of severe frost, ice covered the entire surface of the lake. At the same time, meteorologists and rescue workers warn that the ice remains dangerous and unstable.

A group of researchers from Greece, together with colleagues from Malta and Italy, has made a unique discovery—beneath the bottom of the Gulf of Corinth in the Mediterranean Sea lies a large underground freshwater lake that has existed for about 800,000 years.
