Body parts were found following explosions at a military training ground near Khmelnytskyi – State Bureau of Investigation
Employees of the State Bureau of Investigations discovered body parts during a search at the site of an uncontrolled ammunition detonation at a military training ground near Khmelnytskyi. The remains have already been sent for forensic medical and molecular genetic analysis to identify the victims.
According to the SBI, as of August 3, five servicemen are considered missing. Preliminary information indicates that they were unloading ammunition at a military unit’s warehouse when the explosion began.
Investigators are considering two main theories regarding the tragedy: a violation of safety protocols during the transport or unloading of ammunition, which could have caused the first explosion, as well as a possible act of sabotage aimed at destroying the weapons.
Eight service members sustained injuries as a result of the explosions, but their lives are not in danger. No reports of civilian casualties have been received.
Investigators have already questioned the unit’s command and service members and seized documentation regarding the storage, transport, and unloading of ammunition. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing under the personal supervision of the State Bureau of Investigation’s leadership, the Bureau reported.
