Religious Holidays on August 25: Traditions and Superstitions
On August 25, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, following the New Julian calendar, commemorates Saint Titus of Crete and Saint Bartholomew.
This day is also known by the folk names “Titus the Quiet,” “Bartholomew’s Day,” and “Quiet Dawn.”
Saint Titus of Crete was one of the 70 apostles, a disciple and follower of the Apostle Paul. He accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys and later became the first bishop of Crete.
Titus is considered a model of courage, devotion to the Christian faith, and service to the Church. Among the people, August 25 was known as “Titus the Quiet.”
On this day, Saint Bartholomew the Apostle—one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ—is also honored.
According to church tradition, Bartholomew preached Christianity in Arabia, Mesopotamia, India, and Armenia, where he suffered a martyr’s death. He is considered one of the first preachers of Christianity in the Caucasus.
Among the people, the holiday was called “Bartholomew’s Day” or simply “Bartholomew.”
The name “Quiet Dawn” is linked to folk weather observations. Our ancestors believed that the weather on this day could foreshadow what the coming fall would be like.
- If dark clouds cover the sun in the morning, it will soon get colder.
- A quiet and starry night on Tita’s Day means a warm fall.
- If it rains on August 25, autumn will be dry, and the harvest will be bountiful.
According to folk traditions, on August 25, people were advised to:
- not to argue or provoke conflicts;
- not to start serious tasks in a bad mood;
- not to be lazy, as the day was considered favorable for work;
- not to neglect household chores;
- avoid unnecessary expenses and impulsive purchases.
At the same time, church traditions and folk superstitions have different origins, so these superstitions and prohibitions should be viewed precisely as folk customs, not as church precepts.
As a reminder, on August 24, 2026, according to the New Julian calendar, believers commemorate the holy martyr Eutychius—one of the early Christian preachers and a disciple of the apostles John the Theologian and Paul. His life is associated with the spread of Christian teachings and numerous persecutions. On this day, churches commemorate the saint, offer prayers, and look to his example of steadfastness and fidelity to his faith.
