AI laid pavers in the courtyard of a high school in Khmelnytskyi

AI laid pavers in the courtyard of a high school in Khmelnytskyi

In Khmelnytskyi, Gymnasium No. 21 found itself in a curious situation because of a photo edited using artificial intelligence. In the photo, the school’s courtyard suddenly appeared to be paved with cobblestones, even though it is actually asphalt. Social media users quickly noticed the discrepancy and began joking about this “improvement.”

Gymnasium No. 21 in Khmelnytskyi posted a photo of the school grounds, which is believed to have been edited using artificial intelligence. In the image, the courtyard’s surface looked completely different from how it actually appears. Instead of asphalt, the photo showed neatly laid cobblestones. Visually, the courtyard did indeed look renovated, but the problem is that there is no such pavement on the gymnasium’s grounds.

Real photos of the area show an asphalt surface. Therefore, observant users immediately noticed that the image did not match reality. The local news channel “Bukhanochka Khmelnytskyi” reported on this curious incident. After that, the story quickly caught the attention of social media users.

Users couldn’t resist making jokes

Ukrainians took the situation with a sense of humor. Jokes began to appear in the comments suggesting that the school administration should now remember exactly what its “new” courtyard looked like. One user actually suggested a simple solution: if the next photo shows asphalt again, it could be “replaced” with cobblestones using AI.

Others joked that roads could be repaired this way. After all, such “repairs” require neither construction equipment, nor workers, nor the cost of materials. “The main thing is not to forget what kind of cobblestones the AI laid in the previous photo,” users quipped. Another popular reaction was that now all it takes is to edit a photo correctly to create the impression of a large-scale repair.

Why AI Can Make Such Mistakes

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used for photo editing. It can change the background, remove unwanted objects, improve image quality, or even completely replace individual elements in a photo. However, during such editing, AI doesn’t always correctly understand what exactly is depicted in the photo. It can “add” objects or alter surfaces to make the image look more appealing.

That is why cobblestones might appear in the image instead of regular asphalt. To someone who doesn’t know what the area actually looks like, such a substitution might go unnoticed. The problem is particularly noticeable when a photograph is used to show the actual condition of a school, road, building, or other structure. In such cases, excessive editing can create a false impression of what is actually happening.

In the case of the Khmelnytskyi gymnasium, the story ended mostly with jokes. Social media users quickly noticed the “renovations” that didn’t actually exist and turned the botched use of AI into a source of irony. This was reported by the local news channel Bukhanochka Khmelnytskyi.
