Weather forecasters have warned Ukrainians about the dangers of the first autumn frosts

The first autumn frosts have already begun in Ukraine. They are not as dangerous as spring frosts, but they can still cause damage to agriculture and certain vegetable crops. A meteorologist explained which plants might be affected by the sudden cold snap.

He explained that the harvest for most crops has already been gathered, and the remaining ones (corn, sunflowers, cabbage, root vegetables) are not vulnerable to frosts of this intensity.

“However, the expected frosts may damage vegetable crops (cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants) and melon crops, which are considered frost-sensitive. Therefore, these crops must be harvested in advance," the expert said.

According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, on the nights of October 1–3 in the western and northern regions, as well as in Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Poltava regions, and on October 2 in Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Luhansk regions, and on October 3 in the southern part, ground frosts are expected. Temperatures will drop to 0°...-3°, prompting the declaration of a Level I (yellow) danger alert.

“These weather conditions could damage unharvested vegetables,” meteorologists warn.

Overall, on October 1, dry weather will persist in most regions of Ukraine under the influence of a high-pressure system. Only in the Azov region and in Crimea will there be brief showers in some areas. Cold air will move in from the northeast, so the night will be cool, while the day will be moderately warm.

Partly cloudy skies are expected. The wind will be from the northeast at 7–12 m/s, with gusts of up to 15–20 m/s in some areas of the southeast during the day.

Daytime temperatures will range from 14–19°; in Zakarpattia, temperatures will reach 22°.
