Students at Chernivtsi National University reported problems with housing in dormitories
Some students at Chernivtsi National University reported that, on the eve of the new academic year, they could not find their names on the lists for dormitory assignments.
Second-year student Valeria Gusarova said she found out she wasn’t on the lists less than two weeks before classes began. Other students also said that because of this, they might be left without housing in Chernivtsi.
Among those who reported the problem are internally displaced persons. One student noted that after moving from the occupied territory, she was promised a spot in a dormitory, but after the rooms were reassigned, her name was not on the lists.
The university attributes the situation to a shortage of beds. Chernivtsi National University has about 2,500 dormitory beds, while the number of students far exceeds the available housing capacity. Another 250 IDPs are living in the sixth dormitory, and one of the dormitories was transferred to the Mariupol community after the start of full-scale war.
At the same time, the university assures that it has no plans to evict students who were already living in the dormitories. They may be moved to a different room or relocated to another dormitory.
Chernivtsi National University also stated that it is trying to redistribute available spaces among the faculties and is considering the possibility of renting additional premises.
