Church holiday on April 7: Who do believers pray to, and who celebrates their name day?

Today, April 7, the global community celebrates World Health Day, marking the anniversary of the founding of the relevant UN agency.

At the same time, believers following the New Julian calendar honor the memory of St. George of Melitene, whose life became a model of mercy and spiritual fortitude.

World Health Day was established in 1948 to draw attention to global challenges in the field of medicine.

Each year, the WHO selects a key theme that calls on national governments to ensure access to treatment and quality nutrition for every citizen. In addition, today marks an unusual environmental holiday—International Beaver Day.

These animals are unique engineers of the wild, whose flat tail “serves as a rudder when swimming, a support when sitting or standing upright, and a fat reserve for winter.”

In the church calendar, this day is dedicated to Saint George (Yuri), Bishop of Melitene, who lived in the 9th century.

He became famous as a merciful shepherd who helped the poor, defended the persecuted, and had the gift of healing the sick. Saint Calliopius, a martyr who gave his life for his faith, is also commemorated.

Folk wisdom attaches special significance to April 7, as the weather on this day was considered the key to understanding the coming season. Our ancestors believed that “whatever the weather is on April 7, that’s how it will be at Easter.”

A thunderstorm at this time promises a warm summer and a good nut harvest, while heavy rain foretells a successful harvest of mushrooms and grain. If, however, the sky is cloudless and the sun shines too brightly, one should prepare for a stormy summer.

History has recorded many turning points on this day, from the founding of the oldest universities to technological breakthroughs.

For example, Charles University was founded in Prague in 1348, and 1969 is considered the symbolic birth year of the internet.

There were also tragic events: in 1989, the Soviet nuclear submarine Komsomolets sank as a result of a fire, leading to the deaths of 42 sailors.

Today, men named Yuriy, Georgiy, Danylo, Petro, and Arkadiy celebrate their name days.

On April 7, Ukrainians celebrate the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to the Julian calendar.

For Orthodox Christians, Holy Week has begun.
