The Ministry of Justice has allowed another group of Ukrainians to get married online
The “Diya” app has expanded its “Online Marriage” service. Now, Ukrainians who have lost a spouse can also remarry remotely, provided that the death is recorded in the state registry.
Ukrainians who have lost a spouse can now enter into a new marriage online through “Diya.” To do so, they no longer need to visit the Civil Registry Office in person or submit paper documents. “Diya” announced the launch of this new feature on September 22. The service was updated by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
Previously, when registering a marriage online, the system could not automatically confirm the dissolution of a previous marriage due to the death of one of the spouses. Now, this issue is resolved through state registries.
What Has Changed
The main change affects widows and widowers. If a person has lost a spouse and wishes to start a new family, “Diya” will automatically verify the information regarding the death of the previous partner in the State Register of Civil Status Acts.
If the relevant entry exists, the system will automatically enable the user to file an application for a new marriage. In other words, the person does not need to first go to the Civil Registry Office to confirm the dissolution of the previous marriage. “Diya” explains that the entire process is automated as much as possible. The app retrieves the necessary data and cross-checks it against government registries. The only important condition is that information regarding the death of a husband or wife must be entered into the state registry. If no such record exists, the automatic verification will not work.
How to Get Married Online
To submit an application, open the “Dii” app and go to “Services” → “Family” → “Get Married.” Next, one partner sends the other a link so they can join the application. The couple fills out the required information together and selects the date and time of the online ceremony.
After that, the application must be signed using “Diya.Signature” and the service fee must be paid. The application is reviewed by the Digital Office of the Civil Registry. On the scheduled day, the couple joins the video ceremony. Once the bride and groom say “I do,” they confirm their consent using “Diya.Signature.” After that, the marriage is officially registered.
What Happens After the Ceremony
The marriage registration record should appear in the app within a day. If the couple needs a paper document, they can order a marriage certificate for home delivery via “Ukrposhta.”
In other words, the entire registration process can be completed remotely—from submitting the application to the ceremony and receiving the digital document.
Who Else Can Get Married Through “Diyu”
The “Online Marriage” service has been available in Ukraine since 2024. It allows adult citizens of Ukraine to complete the entire process without visiting the Civil Registry Office in person. The online ceremony takes place via video call, and documents are authenticated with an electronic signature.
The service is particularly important for people who, due to distance, military service, or other circumstances, cannot visit a Civil Registry Office. Now, another life situation has been added to these cases: remarriage following the death of a spouse.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation previously reported that Ukrainians themselves had requested that this option be added to the service. In August, the ministry stated that it plans to expand the functionality of “Online Marriage” specifically to address real-life situations.
As a result, the process of remarriage has become simpler for widows and widowers. If information about the death of a former spouse is already in the state registry, “Diya” will verify it automatically, and a new marriage application can be submitted without having to visit the Civil Registry Office.
