A new Ukrainian-made tram has begun service in Dnipro
In Dnipro, the second modern low-floor tramcar manufactured by the Ukrainian company “Tatra-Yug” has entered service on tram route No. 1. The new vehicle was purchased as part of a collaboration with international partners and the city’s public transportation modernization program.
According to Dnipro Deputy Mayor Ihor Makovtsev, the city plans to receive one new tram each month, and by fall, the number of modern trams on one of the main routes could increase to five.
“In addition, we are collaborating with the European Investment Bank, and tender procedures are currently underway, so there is an opportunity to purchase three more such trams. In other words, we plan for the city to renew its tram fleet with eight such vehicles within a year and a half,” Makovtsev noted.
The purchase of new trams is being financed by a loan from the European Investment Bank as part of the “Urban Public Transport in Ukraine II” project.
The new three-section car features a 100% low-floor design, making it accessible to all types of passengers. Before entering service, the vehicle successfully passed a technical inspection and test runs.
Key features of the new tram include:
- 67 seats and a total passenger capacity of up to 260 people;
- three air conditioners—one for the driver and two for the passenger compartment;
- a heating system for comfortable travel during cold weather;
- ramps for people with disabilities and those with limited mobility;
- a modern transistor-based control system with energy recovery;
- low noise levels while in motion;
- capability for autonomous operation of up to three kilometers.
Twelve drivers in the city have already completed specialized training to operate the new tram cars.
The renewal of the tram fleet is part of a large-scale modernization of Dnipro’s public transportation system, which aims to improve passenger comfort, energy efficiency, and accessibility.
It is worth noting that the renewal of the rolling stock is also underway in other cities across Ukraine. In particular, Kyiv recently acquired eight more modern tram cars, some of which are already operating on city routes.
