In Gostomel, teenagers removed 152 chevrons from a patriotic installation
In Gostomel, Kyiv Oblast, two teenagers removed 152 chevrons from a patriotic installation near the local cultural center. Police identified the boys and filed administrative charges against their parents for failing to properly fulfill their parental responsibilities.
Law enforcement was contacted after the chevrons disappeared from the installation wall in Hostomel. It had been installed the day before Ukraine’s Independence Day near the local cultural center. Police began investigating who exactly had taken the military chevrons. They later determined that two local boys, aged 13 and 15, were involved.
According to the police, the teenagers removed a total of 152 chevrons from the installation. The police report does not specify why the boys did this or what they planned to do with the chevrons afterward.
Since the teenagers are minors, the police worked separately with their parents. As for the adults, law enforcement officials filed administrative charges under Article 184 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. This article establishes liability for the improper fulfillment by parents or guardians of their duties regarding the upbringing of children.
In addition to filing the reports, police officers conducted preventive discussions with the boys and their parents. Law enforcement officials emphasized the need to explain to children the consequences of unlawful behavior and to take a more responsible approach to their leisure time. The Kyiv Region Police also appealed to parents, urging them to take a greater interest in where and with whom their children spend their time. Law enforcement officers advise talking to teenagers about rules of conduct and explaining why they should not damage or take someone else’s property.
The installation featuring chevrons was set up on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, so the disappearance of its elements caught the attention of local residents. Similar patriotic displays and exhibits are used in communities to honor Ukrainian servicemen and remind people of their service.
The police are urging parents to keep a close eye on their children’s behavior and to respond promptly to any potential violations. In this case, law enforcement identified the teenagers and held their parents administratively liable. The Kyiv Regional Police reported the incident.
