A network of so-called rehabilitation centers in Kharkiv that held people against their will has been uncovered
Law enforcement officials in Kharkiv uncovered two illegal rehabilitation centers that had been operating under the guise of a charitable organization for about five years. There, people with drug and alcohol addictions were forcibly detained, isolated from the outside world, and forced to work without pay.
Six participants in the criminal scheme have been notified of the charges against them.
During searches of two private homes in the Slobidskyi and Saltivskyi districts, law enforcement officers freed people who, according to investigators, were being held against their will. Investigators determined that the network had been operating for about five years under the guise of a charitable organization that purportedly provided rehabilitation for people with drug and alcohol addictions. At any given time, there were between 20 and 60 people in each of the houses.
According to the investigation, new “patients” were recruited from among people with addictions and those facing difficult life circumstances. Their relatives were promised treatment, for which the organization charged between 5,000 and 25,000 hryvnias per month. However, law enforcement officials claim that the residents were not provided with any medical or psychological assistance. Their documents, cell phones, and money were confiscated, and the premises were fitted with bars and locks to prevent escape. In addition, the people were forced to work for free and study religious texts. They were threatened and subjected to psychological pressure for disobedience.
