In Lviv, doctors saved a 101-year-old woman after she suffered a stroke

Doctors at the Lviv National Medical University Hospital in Lviv saved a 101-year-old patient who had suffered an ischemic stroke. The woman was hospitalized in time—within the so-called “therapeutic window” of 4.5 hours from the onset of symptoms, which was crucial for successful treatment.

The patient lives with her daughter and son-in-law and monitors her blood pressure daily. That morning, her family noticed that she hadn’t come down for breakfast.

When her daughter entered the room, she found her mother on the floor with characteristic signs of a stroke—a drooping corner of the mouth and slurred speech. An ambulance was called immediately.

At the hospital, the woman was admitted to the stroke unit in serious condition—she was unconscious, unresponsive, and unable to speak.

A contrast-enhanced spiral CT scan revealed that the stroke was in its early stages. Only about two hours had passed since the onset of symptoms.

Doctors emphasize that every minute counts in the event of a stroke—about 2 million neurons die every minute. That is why prompt hospitalization is critically important for preventing irreversible brain damage.

The patient was transported within the “therapeutic window” of 4.5 hours, which allowed for effective medical treatment.

According to neurologist Mariana Averchuk, the woman underwent thrombolytic therapy, after which positive progress was observed.

At first, the patient was unable to swallow on her own, so she was fitted with a nasogastric tube. By the fourth day, following work with rehabilitation specialists, the tube was removed—the woman began sitting down and standing up with assistance, and her speech is gradually returning.

The 101-year-old Lviv resident has already been discharged home. She still has a month of recovery ahead of her, after which, according to doctors’ predictions, she will be able to return to her normal life.

Doctors emphasize that this case is an example of how a rapid response and timely medical care can save a life even at a very advanced age.

Earlier, a 28-year-old woman from Volyn nearly died from severe bacterial pneumonia, which destroyed most of her lung. After several days of illness, the woman ended up in the intensive care unit, and her condition became so critical that doctors were searching for her only chance of survival.

In Lviv, doctors at St. Panteleimon Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery on a pregnant woman with breast cancer. The medical team removed the malignant tumor at 31 weeks of pregnancy and were able to save the lives of both the mother and the child. A team of 12 specialists worked in the operating room, prepared for any possible scenario, including an emergency delivery.
