In Lviv, a passenger train struck and killed a 20-year-old man
A fatal railway accident occurred in Lviv overnight, in which a passenger train struck a young man; his injuries were so severe that he died before medical personnel arrived. The incident happened suddenly in the darkness of night, when there was virtually no chance of avoiding the tragedy. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Police.
On the night of May 23, a fatal traffic accident occurred at the Pidzamche railway station in Lviv, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old local resident who was struck by a passenger train on the Uzhhorod–Odesa route.
The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the city, as the train was traveling according to schedule, and the engineer was unable to avoid the collision despite applying emergency brakes due to limited visibility at night.
The man died at the scene from his injuries before the ambulance arrived, and investigators at the scene preliminarily determined that the collision occurred without any possibility of avoiding it in time. “Investigators from Police Department No. 1 of the Lviv District Police Administration No. 1 have opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 276 (Violation of traffic safety rules or the operation of rail, water, or air transport) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The penalty under this article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to ten years. Police are establishing all the circumstances of the incident,” the police stated.
Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation to determine exactly how the man ended up on the tracks while the train was moving, and whether there were other factors that led to the tragedy.
