Historic cobblestones were discovered in Lviv during repairs on Heroiv UPA Street

While milling the damaged road surface on Heroiv UPA Street in Lviv, road workers discovered historic cobblestones beneath the old layer of asphalt. The ancient paving was found in three locations along the stretch from Bandera Street to Vasylkivskoho Street.

Work on the site had to be temporarily suspended to develop a further technical solution, but starting this coming Wednesday, workers from the contractor “Onur” will resume repairs, according to the Lviv City Council.

Andriy Moskalenko, First Deputy Mayor of Lviv, assured that the discovered cobblestones will be completely dismantled, properly cataloged, and transferred to special storage for later reuse in the restoration of other city streets. The brief pause in work will in no way affect the overall timeline for completing the large-scale reconstruction. According to the Frankivsk District Administration, the road surface on the specified section has already been completely milled, and after the historic paving is dismantled, the contractor will begin preparing a new subbase for subsequent asphalting.

Repair work on this section began on May 19, and the street is currently completely closed to private and public transportation. The Lviv City Council specifically emphasized that all cobblestones dismantled during the repairs must be transported to the warehouses of municipal enterprises in accordance with acceptance and transfer documents, and their subsequent release occurs exclusively by decision of the executive committee or by a resolution of the city council session. According to official data, as of today, the city’s warehouses already hold over 21,000 square meters of historic cobblestones, more than 1,000 square meters of mosaic, and over 700 running meters of antique curbstone.

Lviv recorded a record-low temperature for May 29—the air cooled to 2.2 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest reading on record for this date. Meteorologists note that the previous record had stood since 2015 and has now been officially broken.
