Local councils will have deputy chairs for defense affairs

Ukrainian local councils are establishing the position of deputy chairperson for defense affairs to build up the national resistance system. These positions will be filled by active-duty military personnel seconded by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

The Ministry of Defense has announced the relevant legislative changes in light of Russia’s full-scale aggression.

According to Deputy Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Yevhen Moysyuk, the new officials are expected to strengthen cooperation between the civilian and military sectors. These positions are planned to remain within the councils’ structure even in the event of a return to peacetime. The Ministry of Defense expects that involving military personnel in local self-government will enhance the effectiveness of defense measures.

The Ministry of Defense is preparing a major reform of service conditions and recruitment to the Defense Forces. The first 10 projects are almost ready to be launched. Details are promised to be announced later.
