The number of Ukrainians reported missing in Nepal has risen, according to the Foreign Ministry
The number of Ukrainians with whom contact has been lost in the area affected by the massive natural disaster in Nepal has risen to 64. At the same time, there have been no reports so far of Ukrainian citizens killed or injured.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a group of consular officials from the Ukrainian Embassy in India is currently in Nepal.
Ukrainian diplomats are maintaining constant contact with local authorities, rescue services, tour operators, and the relatives of the missing Ukrainians.
Search and rescue operations are being conducted daily. They are significantly hampered by fog, extensive damage to roads, and the risk of further landslides.
More than 2,000 people and over 300 pieces of equipment have been deployed to the rescue operation.
At the initiative of the Ukrainian Embassy, requests were sent through Interpol to the company that provides geolocation services for the devices used by some Ukrainian citizens.
As a result, information was obtained regarding the last recorded coordinates of the devices prior to the natural disaster.
The company is currently attempting to determine the current locations of these devices, which could assist rescue workers and diplomats in their search for the Ukrainians.
On August 26, a massive flood accompanied by landslides occurred on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The natural disaster caused significant destruction and resulted in a large number of casualties and people missing.
According to local police, 489 people have died, and another 2,381 remain missing.
Among those missing are 644 foreign nationals, mainly from India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The list of missing persons also includes 127 Nepalese citizens who had traveled from abroad and 1,737 Nepalese nationals.
The Ukrainian side continues to coordinate the search for its citizens and verify information regarding their possible whereabouts.
