A former Ukrainian police general has been detained in Poland in connection with a bribery case
A former high-ranking Ukrainian police officer has been detained in Poland on suspicion of attempting to bribe a Polish official. The case does not involve espionage or sabotage, but has already attracted widespread media attention.
In Poland, law enforcement officials detained a 62-year-old former Ukrainian police general, identified as Volodymyr B., as part of an investigation into an attempt to bribe a public official in Warsaw. According to Przemysław Nowak, a spokesperson for the Polish National Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred earlier this month, and the suspect allegedly offered a financial benefit to a government official. According to our information, the individual in question is Volodymyr Bedrykovsky.
The Polish prosecutor’s office emphasized that the case has no connection to espionage or sabotage, although various theories have already appeared in the media—ranging from possible ties to Russia to involvement in organized schemes. Currently, only the fact of the detention and three-month arrest has been officially confirmed, and the man is considered the sole suspect in the case.
According to Polish investigators, Volodymyr B. previously held high-ranking positions within the Ukrainian law enforcement system. Specifically, he was the police chief in Zhytomyr, the first deputy minister of internal affairs of Ukraine, and also headed units combating organized crime from 2008 to 2010.
Ukrainian media note that the suspect in the case has previously been linked to various journalistic investigations into possible financial schemes and luxury property. At the same time, none of these cases resulted in court convictions.
The Polish side is continuing its investigation, and several agencies, including internal security services, are involved in the case. Representatives of Ukrainian authorities have also been informed of the situation, and an official response from Kyiv is currently expected. This was reported by TVP.
