In Vinnytsia, doctors removed nine magnets from a child who had swallowed them five years ago
At the Vinnytsia Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, doctors successfully removed nine magnetic balls from a child’s body; according to the parents, the boy had swallowed them about five years ago.
The foreign objects were discovered by chance during an examination. For several years, the child had no pain, signs of intestinal obstruction, bleeding, or other symptoms.
According to the hospital, the magnetic balls had been attracted to one another for a long time through a fold in the stomach lining, resulting in the formation of a submucosal channel in which the foreign bodies were partially lodged.
Despite the absence of symptoms, the medical team detected tissue changes that could have led to serious complications. Following the examination, the doctors decided to adopt an organ-preserving approach.
“Since it was impossible to remove the magnets using standard endoscopic instruments, we employed a proprietary magnet-assisted technique that allowed us to safely and controllably remove all foreign bodies without a laparotomy,” — the hospital reported.
After the procedure, the child remained under clinical and radiological observation. The medical team found no complications or signs of damage to the organ walls. On the third day, the boy was discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition.
