Two Russian agents were detained in Zaporizhzhia for setting fire to infrastructure facilities
In Zaporizhzhia, law enforcement officers detained two local residents suspected of carrying out missions for Russian intelligence agencies. According to the investigation, they attempted to set fire to a communications facility and the building of the Department of Civil Status Registration (DRAZS).
The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police reported the detentions. According to law enforcement officials, the suspects were acting on instructions from Russian handlers and were tasked with damaging critical infrastructure facilities.
Investigative proceedings are currently underway, and notices of suspicion are being prepared for the detainees. Law enforcement officials are establishing all the circumstances of their collaboration with representatives of Russian intelligence agencies.
According to the investigation, the suspects acted independently but were recruited through a similar scheme—via Telegram dating channels. Representatives of the Russian Federation used fake accounts and offered the men communication and intimate relationships.
“As the investigation revealed, the suspects acted separately but came to the enemy’s attention through the same scheme—while seeking acquaintances via Telegram channels. There, ‘girls’ from fake accounts contacted them, offering intimate relationships,” the SBU reported.
Afterward, as the SBU notes, the suspects received phone calls from individuals who identified themselves as employees of the Ukrainian security service. They claimed that the men’s online acquaintances had been detained for collaborating with Russia and offered them tasks to complete in exchange for “release.”
Law enforcement officials determined that the men had attempted to set fire to a communications facility and a civil registry office.
Both suspects were detained within 24 hours of committing the crimes. During searches, flammable mixtures and cell phones containing evidence of possible collaboration with Russian intelligence services were seized from them.
They were notified of charges under Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional destruction or damage to property by arson). The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
