Ukraine will receive new air defense reinforcements from Italy and France
Italy and France are preparing a new aid package to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. According to La Repubblica, Kyiv may receive additional SAMP/T systems, Aster 30 interceptor missiles, and long-range radars.
Specifically, the package includes four SAMP/T NG systems and seven radars. Italy plans to transfer some of the Aster 30 missiles from its stockpiles in the coming months.
According to the publication, Italy is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine, which will include four SAMP/T NG systems, Aster 30 missiles, and seven long-range radars. The package is estimated to be worth nearly 3 billion euros, and funding is to come from European loan programs.
Separately, there are plans to transfer a portion of the Aster 30 missiles from Italian stockpiles to Ukraine. They are scheduled to be delivered as early as October so that the Ukrainian military can use them with the SAMP/T systems.
Ukraine will manufacture Aster 30 missiles
An important part of the agreements is a license to manufacture Aster 30 missiles in Ukraine. France and Italy have agreed to allow local production of these interceptors, which should reduce Ukraine’s dependence on ready-made missile deliveries from Europe. These are the Aster 30 N1BT missiles used in the SAMP/T NG systems. They are designed to engage air targets, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.
France will also transfer SAMP/T systems
At the same time, France plans to transfer one SAMP/T system to Ukraine, along with new radars, as early as this fall. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously announced an agreement with Paris to expedite the delivery of air defense systems. In July, Ukraine had already signed an agreement to purchase four new SAMP/T NG systems. While these are being manufactured, France has agreed to temporarily transfer two systems of the previous SAMP/T version to Kyiv.
SAMP/T is a European medium- and long-range system developed jointly by France and Italy. It uses Aster 30 missiles and is designed, in particular, to intercept ballistic missiles. According to La Repubblica, the new systems, radars, and related equipment are to be fully delivered to Ukraine by 2027.
