Ukraine plans to increase its nuclear power capacity to 25 GW by 2050
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal announced during a meeting with the supervisory board of Energoatom the ambition to increase nuclear power generation capacity to 25 GW by 2050. The priority task at present is to complete the construction of the 3rd and 4th power units at the Khmelnitsky NPP, and subsequently to build the 5th and 6th units at the same facility.
The Ministry of Energy reports on strategic plans to develop a new energy architecture.
The government aims to build a vertically integrated system covering the entire cycle: from uranium concentrate extraction to spent fuel storage. An important step in this process will be the merger of the SkhidGZK enterprise with Energoatom, for which the Cabinet of Ministers has already submitted a corresponding bill to parliament. The construction of a plant for the production of nuclear fuel components in the Mykolaiv region was also discussed.
In addition to expanding capacity, the minister emphasized the importance of financial audits and increasing transparency in the company’s management. While Russia continues to pose threats to global nuclear security, Ukraine is focusing on strengthening its own energy independence. Energoatom’s new supervisory board, led by Rumina Velshi, will coordinate the implementation of these reforms in accordance with G7 standards. The implementation of these plans will allow nuclear power generation to remain the foundation of the country’s stable energy supply in the long term.
The day before, during a speech in parliament ahead of the vote on his appointment, Denys Shmyhal announced a series of key initiatives for the energy sector.
The Verkhovna Rada had planned to consider a bill on the completion of power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP at the expense of Western donors. The document was drafted without consultation with the EU and contained corruption risks, so it was withdrawn from consideration.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is ready to provide support to Ukraine in implementing the project to complete power units No. 3 and No. 4 at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant.
