Ukraine will strengthen the protection of its power grid ahead of winter
Ukraine has changed its approach to protecting its energy infrastructure ahead of the heating season, focusing on reinforcing substations.
This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal during the International Cohesion Forum.
According to him, the state is transitioning to the so-called second level of power grid protection. This involves additional fortification of critical facilities, primarily substations, which have recently become the main target of Russian attacks.
Shmyhal emphasized that the enemy is systematically targeting 110-kilovolt facilities, especially in frontline regions.
At the same time, the threat is not limited to these territories alone. Risks to the power grid remain throughout the country, so preparations for winter are aimed at increasing the overall resilience of the energy infrastructure.
As a reminder, Ukrainian energy, heating, gas, utility, and railway workers, who are working under difficult conditions to restore electricity and heat, will receive bonuses of 20,000 hryvnias per month. The bonuses will be paid for January, February, and March 2026.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The main topics of discussion were Ukraine’s energy security amid winter shelling and the coordination of diplomatic efforts following the conclusion of the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to the United States.
