Ukrainians Are Increasingly Choosing Online Marriage — Statistics from the Ministry of Justice
During the first half of 2026, 79,516 marriages were officially registered in Ukraine, which is 16% more than during the same period last year. At the same time, an increasing number of couples are opting for remote marriage registration—nearly four out of ten couples took advantage of the opportunity to register their marriage online.
This is evidenced by new statistics from the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. The ministry notes that the online service continues to gain popularity among Ukrainians, as it allows couples to register their marriage without having to visit government offices in person and significantly simplifies the registration process itself.
On average, about 13,300 couples get married in Ukraine each month. At the same time, statistics from previous years show that the second half of the year is traditionally a busier period for weddings. For example, in 2025, the number of weddings in the second half of the year was 41% higher than in the first half.
The most popular dates among newlyweds this year were Valentine’s Day, when 1,248 couples got married, and the palindromic date of June 26, 2026, which 2,528 couples chose for their wedding.
The highest number of marriages over the past six months was registered in Kyiv—19,928. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast came in second with 15,545 new families, while Lviv Oblast took third place, where 8,909 couples tied the knot.
This trend in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Lviv regions may be linked to the development of online marriage registration services. It is in these regions that digital civil registry offices are operating.
In total, 30,488 couples have registered their marriages remotely since the beginning of the year. Nearly four out of ten new families used the online service.
At the same time, in most other regions of the country, the number of marriages contracted decreased compared to the first half of 2025.
According to the Ministry of Justice, 12,175 couples divorced through civil registry offices in the first half of 2026. This is 4% less than during the same period in 2025.
The number of divorces, like the number of marriages, traditionally increases in the second half of the year. On average, it is about 30% higher than in the first half.
The largest decreases in the number of divorces compared to the first half of 2025 were recorded in Zhytomyr Oblast (–20%) and Poltava Oblast (–19%). At the same time, in the Ternopil region, this figure rose by 17%, in Zakarpattia by 15%, and in the Chernihiv region by 11%.
The highest number of official divorces was registered in Kyiv—1,801. This was followed by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (1,125), Kyiv Oblast (898), Odesa Oblast (880), and Kharkiv Oblast (874).
At the same time, the publication emphasizes that these figures do not reflect the full picture, as the statistics only account for divorces processed through the Civil Registry Office. If a couple has minor children in common or property disputes, the marriage is dissolved through the courts and is not included in these statistics. According to the service’s estimates, currently about one in four divorces is processed through the Civil Registry Office.

In Ukraine, nearly 40% of marriages were registered online: how many couples got married in 2026.
Previously, the Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Transformation, began beta testing a new service in the “Diya” app that will allow couples to dissolve their marriage remotely. This service is designed for spouses who have reached a mutual agreement and do not have any minor children together.
A new service has been launched in Ukraine on the “Diya” portal, allowing veterans and their families to submit a single joint application to receive several government services at once. Specifically, through the system, it is now possible to immediately apply for the status of a person with a war-related disability, the status of a family member of a fallen Defender, social assistance, as well as a one-time cash payment from the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
